Dear Friends,

I am delighted to inform you that friends and admirers of the late Adam Watson are establishing an award in his memory in the University’s Department of Politics.  The Adam Watson Award will fund an outstanding graduate student or junior faculty member to pursue innovative thought in the study of international politics.

During a career that lasted well into his 90s, Adam touched the lives of people around the world as a diplomat, scholar, and much loved teacher.  His diplomatic career involved him directly in the great events of the mid-Twentieth Century, including the Second World War, the Cold War, and decolonization.  Adam served as British ambassador in several African countries and in Cuba and as Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office.

A rare practitioner who was equally as comfortable in the academic world, Adam was a founding member of the influential British Committee on International Politics.  In 1977, he became a fellow of the University’s Center for Advanced Thought and a visiting professor and he resided in Charlottesville for the rest of his life.  It was during these years that he wrote his landmark Evolution of International Society and other distinguished works, including Hegemony and History, published only months before his death.

Adam was an inspired lecturer who took enormous pleasure in teaching.  His students today occupy a broad array of senior positions in diplomacy, academia, intelligence, and other fields.  He was very proud of their accomplishments and enjoyed hearing about and from them until he passed away in August 2007.

Adam’s beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Katharine “Andy” Watson, is the lead donor for this fund and would be pleased to speak with any of Adam’s admirers who would be interested in contributing to it as well. In order to build an endowment to sustain this prize, the department must raise $100,000. Andy will match all gifts up to $10,000 to help reach this goal.

To make a gift toward this award in Adam’s memory, please send your donation to Adam Watson Fund, at the address at the top of this letter.  If you prefer, you may also make your gift online using a credit card at www.campaign.virginia.edu/supportwatsonfund.

The University invites all interested parties to contact David Callaghan in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at 434 924 6156 or [email protected] for details.

Sincerely yours,

Jeffrey W. Legro
